With the fifth pick in the 1999 NFL Draft the New Orleans Saints select Texas Longhorn runningback Ricky Williams.
Ricky Williams stayed with the New Orleans team from 1999-2001 with a total of 3,129 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. In 2002, the Miami Dolphins received Mr. Williams for two draft picks in a trade with the New Orleans Saints.
In 2006, the Miami Dolphin running back was suspended for the whole NFL season as he tested positive for marajuana. After the suspension happened the running back was interested in playing for the Toronto Argonauts. Williams signed for a one-year contract worth $240,000.
Which leads to his early retirement. At such a young age (27 years old), Williams officially reitred on May 2004. He was questioning himself, he has had social anxiety disorder. He returned to the league in 2005.
His recent years with the Dolphins have been positive. At 32, Williams has 1,780 yards and 15 touchdowns from 2008-present.
“Ricky Williams is an educated guy, he made stupid mistakes with the use of marajuana. He has turned his life around. Williams learned from his suspension and it just shows, look where he is now.”- Andrew B.
